a broken-hearted family

my family has grown up with dogs all around us. dutchess, sasha, woolly, jasper, cassie, whitesocks, ringo, twix and muffins , were far more than mere pets, they were legitimate members of our family.
we've had to deal with painful deaths in the past, from old age, to suspected poisonings by a disgruntled neighbour, to euthanasia, but it's the first time we've ever had to deal with a crisis like this.
last thursday, unknown to us, muffins, the latest addition to our family decided to stealthily bolt out the gate in search of a taunting cat. none of us have a clue as to how she got out, but only discovered it a couple of hours later when everyone at home realized that she wasn't with another member of the family. hours of searching and buckets of tears later, she still remained lost, and we, believing in the inherent good of our fellow human beings, felt sure that someone would return her. afterall, she did have her collar on, and on it, is our phone number and address. surely it was just a matter of time before a good samaritan, nay, a normal person with a heart, would return her.
we've learnt the hard way, that humans are not all inherently good, and that a large percentage of us are selfish. i say this, because five days, 2000 posters, and 1000 flyers later, the only calls we've gotten were hoaxes leading us to phantom residences, and strangers trying to con a reward out of a grieving family.
i guess you'll need to be the guardian of a pet to really know the bond i am talking about. but more importantly, if you had any semblance of a heart, you'd know the anguish that a family faces when any of it's members goes missing. and if you can, despite knowing that, keep that missing member from being reunited with the family, then you are the lowest of the low, and i trust that your bad karma will boomerang in time, and you will be served the just desserts that are owed you.
