the ones who got sloshed

a friday night, friends gathered at a small bar in serangoon gardens, i arrive at 1:15am with fen after working the late shift. the boys have been drinking... well a couple of them at any rate. seng is riding, maye is driving, soh is too lazy to walk the five minute walk from his house and decides to drive too, so only eugene and zai are the ones tucking into the alcohol with any conviction.
an hour (any many goading insults from zai) later, soh chugs down a couple, way more than average for this non-drinker.
peer pressure... it'll get you everytime.

you know you are doing something right...
... when you find out that darth vader uses the same template as you do on his blog. of course, his being the dark lord of the sith and all makes it obvious that he would use reverse type on a black background.
what can i say? even bad-assed villians can keep journals.

a broken-hearted family

my family has grown up with dogs all around us. dutchess, sasha, woolly, jasper, cassie, whitesocks, ringo, twix and muffins , were far more than mere pets, they were legitimate members of our family.
we've had to deal with painful deaths in the past, from old age, to suspected poisonings by a disgruntled neighbour, to euthanasia, but it's the first time we've ever had to deal with a crisis like this.
last thursday, unknown to us, muffins, the latest addition to our family decided to stealthily bolt out the gate in search of a taunting cat. none of us have a clue as to how she got out, but only discovered it a couple of hours later when everyone at home realized that she wasn't with another member of the family. hours of searching and buckets of tears later, she still remained lost, and we, believing in the inherent good of our fellow human beings, felt sure that someone would return her. afterall, she did have her collar on, and on it, is our phone number and address. surely it was just a matter of time before a good samaritan, nay, a normal person with a heart, would return her.
we've learnt the hard way, that humans are not all inherently good, and that a large percentage of us are selfish. i say this, because five days, 2000 posters, and 1000 flyers later, the only calls we've gotten were hoaxes leading us to phantom residences, and strangers trying to con a reward out of a grieving family.
i guess you'll need to be the guardian of a pet to really know the bond i am talking about. but more importantly, if you had any semblance of a heart, you'd know the anguish that a family faces when any of it's members goes missing. and if you can, despite knowing that, keep that missing member from being reunited with the family, then you are the lowest of the low, and i trust that your bad karma will boomerang in time, and you will be served the just desserts that are owed you.

equal opportunity insulter
yes i make fun of malays, and indians, and chinese, and japanese, and koreans, and eurasians, and caucacians (crackers, poms, frogs, krauts, wops etc), and hispanics, and blacks. suffice to say, if i know of them, it's pretty safe to assume i've made fun of them.
no i am not racist. hell, I'm so mixed that i probably have a bit of every race in me.
love all, mock all. that's my motto.
question of the day: are you dumb?

symbianized
i think i am the master of brainwashing, and i have no more gullible subject to brainwash than myself.
after all that talk about which phone she should get, guess who ends up forking out a bunch of money to replace an already fantastic phone for something that's a lot better, but very different from what i am used to.
she describes it as being symbianized, and according to her, once i've tried it, i can never go back. kinda like the pringles of the phone world.
have to say that while it's different in many ways... it is promising.
stay tuned for more

it hurts...
...when the person you care about doesn't tell you things... when she thinks that you will do naught but indulge in petty name-calling and unreasonable behavior.
so now it's time to ask myself if it's just her being paranoid, or if i am really as bad as she makes me out to be.

wanted: new phone
phone shopping with her didn't go off quite as well as it should have. for starters, the nokia 3230 she's had her eye on turns out to be a plasticky ergonomic nightmare. it's stiff buttons and user unfriendly menu button placements sent her spiraling down the pit of darkest despair as she realized that it was something she couldn't use.
for those of you who already know her, you'll remember that she likes large phones. she loses things so easily that she has no choice but to choose monstrosities that stick out so badly, you can't help but see them. what that means is, no slick small technological marvel for her.
but i digress, back to the story.
so of course, the nokia 6680 turns up right next to the disappointing 3230, and though she makes excuses that it has a bunch of functions that she doesn't need, i know that the $888 price tag (before trade-in) is what bothers her the most. granted that it IS a lot of money to pay for a phone, but if you seriously think about it, the cellphone is one of two things we use most in our lives (the other being a computer) and you might as well invest in one that makes you happy if you are going to use it for awhile. oh, here's a disclaimer, just in case you think she's being extravagant, i'll have you know that her current phone is over two years old, and starting to go wonky, so a new one is NEEDED.
let's do the math:
new phone ($888) minus trade-in value of new phone ($150) = $738
assuming the phone lasts for two years (which i think i will), the monthly cost incurred is $738 divided by 24 months = $30.75/month. this breaks down to about $1 dollar a day, less than the cost of a can of coke at the local kopitiam (coffeeshop for you non-singaporeans)
i don't know about you, but to keep my sanity, i would be glad to fork out $1 a day.
too bad my reputation as a spendthrift completely negates my opinion.
ps: it seems like this is in the works, but no telling if it'll make it to asia. i'm sure it'll be cheaper, but is it worth the wait?
