hypocrisy?

a nice little story, it's vesak day, a buddhist holiday, and this hindu family is out to celebrate this special occasion with their buddhist friends and neighbours. the candles are for the candlelight procession, when the symbolic spreading of the light takes place. they refuse to run the picture because the people in it are not buddhists.

so much for us singapore citizens pledging ourselves as one united people, regardless of race, language or religion.

in the past week...

... i have:

- gone for a photo assignment only to discover to my horror that i left all my CF cards at home, INCLUDING the one in the camera. this translated into a $260 mistake as i had to buy two new 1gb kingstons (the cheapest cathay had). steph tells me that one can never have too many CF cards, but my stock is currently showing 1x 2gb, 4 x 1gb, and 2 x 512mb cards. am sure i will end up using them all one day.

- taken pictures of armless swedish woman lena maria competing in a swimming competition, shot the most interesting basketball game i've seen since coming back to singapore (tjc vs hci in the boys national division a finals with tjc winning 75-68), watched anakin get his limbs cut off before his final conversion to the darth vader we know and love.

- given a talk on iphoto for apple, shot teenaged boys going crazy over para para paradise (i don't get it), watched/shot the FA cap and discovered how shady my sports desk is.

- blabbed about how the company isn't making good business decisions to one of the newsmakers at a shoot of mine, only to discover that he is on the board of directors (it turned out well though, he was ready to listen and was quick to make suggestions on what he could do)

- had lunch with joanelle (finally) for the first time since she's been back.

- started teaching my photojournalism and basic photography classes at temasek polytechnic. sigh, part of me is happy to be back, but the part that realizes that this only gives me one off day a week for the next three months laments.

- had the fortune to have two birthdays in my family, may (20th) and dad (25th)

- spent $25 dollars on parking... in one day.

i'm tired, but yes, i know, i really need to stop procrastinating and start updating this blog more regularly.

pros and cons

after recently discovering the force fx lightsabers by master replicas as well as accompanying pictures and videos, i've had to weight the pros and cons about blowing $200 on a piece plastic/metal with LEDs.

cons:
- it's a lot of money
- i would never take it outside my house
- i'd hardly use it in my house
- it looks its best in complete darkness
- i wouldn't be able to 'play' with anyone
- there is always the risk of this happening
- it's somewhat embarassing to be one of THOSE guys
- the money spent on it could be used for better things

pros:
- it's a lightsaber, and the coolest one yet.

i'm sold.

damn she's getting better

at shooting i mean, erm... the photographic kind that is.

after seeing stuff like this and this, i fear that i will soon have to relinquish control of the camera to her.

she's back!

i've no doubt been alternating between feeling sorry for myself, missing her, and throwing myself into work this last week. house of wax with randy and ming was a welcome reprieve, not because it was be any measure a great movie, but more because most of my predictions came true, and the two women (paris hilton and elisha cuthbert) were good eye candy. oh yeah, and the company was good too.

this week has also been a major money spender. shelled out 380 smackers for one gig of ram, and i have to say that my powerbook has never been the same since. also filed in the inpulse buy section is my new psp, good fun, but at wallet emptying price.

however, all that retail therapy (and self pitying) should be over cause she's back, and the sun is shining once more.

counting the hours

it's only been a day but i'm already missing her like crazy.

who would have guessed that i would end up being dependent on someone to this extent. so much for being the societal sort, constantly surrounded by friends and acquaintances. sure the friends are still there (and i thank them for hanging around) but somehow life seems somewhat colorless without her, my usual banter feels muted and forced, as if the echo resounding from that empty part of my life is too loud to tolerate.

sounds rather melodramatic i know, but at the end of the day, it all boils down to the fact that i believe she is an integral part of me, one that i am loath to do without.

god only knows how i am going to survive the upcoming week.

things people do

in my opinion, this entry by ipod case designer nikki sevcik should have won the "make a meatspace shuffle" creativity competition organized by mike davidson.

alas, it was not to be. but the other honorable mentions are pretty interesting too.

reminiscing about irc

yes, i was one of those sad, dorky kids talking to perfect strangers in cyberspace. irc (or internet relay chat for the uninitiated) was a big thing when i was getting into the internet. it started from my sister's nus unix account (ahhh leonis!) when i was 15, and continued intermittently till i was about 21 and going through freshman year in college.

surfing across bash.org made me realize how fun things were back then, and made me cringe to see how little of a life i had. remember, the general rule on about people on irc seems to be "attractive, single, mentally stable: choose two"

here's a selection of some of the funnier conversations and quips floating around in chatrooms:

Primus521: hey dude the funniest thing happened to me today
Primus521: im at walmart and this chick is buying a box of tampons and they are missing the upc and wont ring up
Primus521: so the cashier tells his buddy to get a price check on tampax
Primus521: the dude looks at him and says, "the kind u push in, or the kind you hammer in?"
Primus521: lol
Primus521: turns out he misheard him
Primus521: he thought he said thumbtacks
Primus521: you should have seen the look on the chicks face
Primus521: omfg
Primus521: til the day i die
Primus521: i will never forget it
