The first cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) emerged in Guangdong Province, China sometime in mid-November 2002, but it wasn't until March 1, 2003, that a 26-year-old flight attendant was admitted to a hospital in Singapore with respiratory symptoms. Singapore's first SARS case quickly spread causing a total of 33 deaths out of 238 possible cases, the highest in the region behind China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

On the frontline of the battle against SARS were the healthcare workers of the Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore's designated SARS hospital. Despite inital public fear towards those bravely fighting the disease, Singaporeans soon realized the risks undertaken by these select few, and lauded their tireless dedication towards eradicating the virus.
